Transcript: Kwikset SmartKey Products, Featured at the 2008 International Builders' Show

Watch the Video on Rekeyable Lock (Kwikset)

HOST: I think every builder is familiar with Kwikset. One thing I like about the International Builders' Show, you guys always come out with something new each year. (VENDOR: Sure) So tell us a little bit about this new product.

VENDOR: Sure. This is called SmartKey (HOST: Right) and it's the first deadbolt that you can actually rekey yourself and in less than thirty seconds.

HOST: Wow! (VENDOR: That's fast) That's awesome! And I mean as a builder, too, just handing out keys as I'm starting to secure a home as I'm building it -- (VENDOR: Sure) So you're telling me basically I can put this deadbolt on. As I want to eliminate people from coming into the house I can rekey it.

VENDOR: Any time that you want right on site.

HOST: Show me a little bit how it works. I mean my interest is piqued.

VENDOR: Sure. Well the first thing is you just put in the existing key that works (DEMO) and you turn it to the right. You have a learn tool. You put the learn tool into the slot. (DEMO) You take out the existing key, put in a new key with a different pattern, (HOST: Okay) and then just lock it and its rekeyed. (HOST: Wow) And now the old key no longer works.

HOST: And see, something like this would be great. I think I can sell this to a homeowner because, like me, people tend to forget keys or lose keys. But as the builder in me, I'm thinking this is something I can put a little bit of money into and carry from new home to new home to new home (VENDOR: Sure) and be able to keep -- let some contractors in the house (VENDOR: That's right) and also eliminate the ones that are finished.

VENDOR: And it gives you greater security. You no longer need an on-site professional to do it. Any of your trades people could change the lock right there on site.

HOST: Yes, because this costs -- I mean if we have to have a locksmith I'm spending, you know, a good hundred dollars for them to come out and unlock it and make us new keys.

VENDOR: Exactly. You no longer need to do that. And it also gives you the convenience of one key. So you can actually key all the locks in the house to just one key, (HOST: Right) so that they all work together.

HOST: And I can always have like a master key for all construction sites and then I can always change them whenever I need to.

VENDOR: You know that's a great question about the master key. In the technology since it changes between two different key patterns, there's actually not a master key option. But instead you can change it to a different key.

HOST: I can change that key but then I can have one set that's all keyed the same.

VENDOR: Yeah. So what you can do is you could use one key as the master key and the other key as kind of like a valet key and just change between the two. In essence this ends up being the master key.

HOST: So you don't have to keep buying replacement keys, (VENDOR: No) you just flip flop back and forth.

VENDOR: And it works with any Kwikset key.

HOST: That is awesome. Kwikset has done it again! A great new product! (VENDOR: Thank you) Have a great builder's show.

VENDOR: All right. Thank you. [END]

[TAKE TWO]

HOST: One thing I love about the International Builder's Show is the new products, and Kwikset always seems to amaze me with something new. Can you tell me a little bit about what Kwikset has in store for us this year?

VENDOR: Sure. We have SmartKey which is a brand new deadbolt. It's the first deadbolt that you can actually rekey yourself in less than thirty seconds. So let me show you how it works.

HOST: Yeah, beautiful.

VENDOR: Okay first you do is put in the existing key. (DEMO) You turn it to about three o' clock so it's to the right. You have a learn tool. There is a slot. You place it in the slot. (HOST: This slot there?) That's the learn tool. You now take out the existing key, put in the new key, and that quickly it's been rekeyed to the new key.

HOST: Now I see as a builder you know what I'm thinking? I'm thinking every time I want to secure a house and I want to let some subs in but not some subs, I can go in, rekey this, not play a locksmith. And also when I'm finished with that house I can take it to the next house and I can continue to reuse this. Now what's -- What's the angle for the consumer?

VENDOR: That's a good question. You know for the consumer you have to ask yourself -- The first question is who's got a key to your home? I mean the last time you gave it out to a contractor, a painter, babysitter -- Maybe you went on vacation and it was a neighbor. Did you really get that key back? (HOST: Right) Well this gives you the chance to kind of use as a valet key the and regular key and switch between the two or just rekey it to make sure you have that personal safety.

HOST: Right. And the cost of just one trip from the locksmith is over a hundred dollars plus, I mean, add on the cost of the extra keys. So in the beginning install this and cut out some of that cost.

VENDOR: Exactly. You can rekey it yourself any time you want. And you have the one key convenience. You can actually rekey all your SmartKey locks to just one key.

HOST: Beautiful. I love this product.

VENDOR: Great. Thank you. [END]
