Transcript: Shaw Products, Featured at the 2008 International Builders' Show

Watch the Video on Green Flooring (Shaw Industries)

HOST: Tracy, it's great to see Shaw Industries at the builders' show again. Now tell us a little bit about Shaw Industries and maybe what new do you guys have at this year's builders' show.

TRACY: Shaw Industries -- we're a full-service flooring provider. So, it's hardwood, carpet, area, and laminate rugs. What's new for this year is our Shaw Green Edge and our Shaw Green Initiatives with our carpet, as well as our hardsurface.

HOST: So, like builders, you're going green also.

TRACY: Going green with the builders. Yes. It's a great story. We can actually take our carpet and recycle it back into carpet over and over again.

HOST: Very nice. Do you have some samples here of this carpet?

TRACY: I sure do. These are just a few representatives. This is Anso, which is a tight, six-nylon carpet. With a tight, six-nylon carpet, when the homeowners are finished with their carpet, instead of it going to the landfill --

HOST: It's great to see Shaw Industries at the builders' show again. But tell us a little bit about Shaw and what new products you guys are showcasing at this year's builders' show.

TRACY: With Shaw, we provide hardwood, carpet, ceramic, area rugs, and tile. This year, what's new for the show is our Shaw Green Edge. We have hundreds of initiatives where we're going green, and I'm going to talk to you just about a few (HOST: Okay.) and one of them is our carpet. Our carpet can be recycled over and over again. It never has to hit the landfill.

HOST: So as a builder, I can put it in, but then if I put on my remodeler hat, so I can come in and I take out your carpet, and that carpet can be recycled and made into new carpet.

TRACY: Absolutely. Over and over again. It's not one and done. We will take it back over and over again and turn it into carpet.

HOST: Okay, and are you guys doing some green initiatives in the tile and hardwood also?

TRACY: We are. We have some great hardwood products. It's called Epic Collection. And we are using up to sixty-seven-percent recycled content in the hardwood.

HOST: Wow! That's incredible.

HOST: Now, glad to see Shaw Industries at the builders' show again. I'm really interested in what kind of new products do you have for this year's builders' show?

TRACY: The new products for this year is our Anso Nylon. This collection is called Style Solutions. (HOST: Right.) Where we can take our Ansix Nylon. We take this, and we break it down into its original state. (HOST: Uh-huh.) And we take that and we extrude it back into carpet over and over again.

HOST: So a great recycling program as a builder. Brand-new home and put this in, I can come back in so many years and do a remodeling job. We can pull this carpet up, give it back to you guys, and you can make us new carpet.

TRACY: Next time around, it can still be carpet. It never has to hit the landfill.

HOST: And now Shaw does hardwood floors, too? And you've got some green initiatives there?

TRACY: Absolutely. In our Epic Collection, we have an Envirocore, which we use up to sixty-seven-percent less newly forested trees. So we have up to sixty-seven-percent recycled content in there.

HOST: Great. What kind of new trends do you see in the flooring industry?

TRACY: In the flooring industry, when it comes to the carpet, it's the softer, more luxury, casual-retreat look. So here you have something -- These represent more of a sisal or a jute or a seagrass. (HOST: Right.) Feel how soft it is. (HOST: Wow!) It feels wonderful underfoot. It is great for staining and soiling for your homeowners' lifestyles, and it's beautiful in your two-tone colors from the herringbone to the sisal to the jute look.

HOST: The color selections -- Are you coming out with new colors or is there a color trend there?

TRACY: Colors are funny. It's like milk. They don't expire, but they are cyclical so they do come back. (HOST: Right.) The earthtones are still very much on the builder end.

HOST: And that's what we use. We do a lot of spec building, so we always try to stay neutral, and not scare anybody away with their orange or red.

TRACY: Exactly. What's interesting is the colors are getting more saturated though so you have more chocolates, espressos, as well. So they are getting darker. So that's a great trend that we're following -- in hard surfaces, as well as in soft surface.

HOST: That is awesome. Now is there anything else you want to tell us about Shaw or the flooring industry or what's coming up?

[NONINTERVIEW DIALOGUE AND FOOTAGE]

HOST: Tracy, tell us a little bit about the Envirocore.

TRACY: What's great about the Envirocore, it's not just saving the environment. It's great for the homeowner, as well. It has an incredible dimensional stability. With the Envirocore, we grind the tree into an HDF, so it's nondirectional. (HOST: Right.) So you don't get those seasonal gaps and (HOST: Right.) swelling like you would with the humidity and with the moisture temperatures of the seasonal changes. So, it's a much more dimensionally stable product.

HOST: That'll make my homeowners a little more happier.

TRACY: Exactly. You won't have to stick a quarter in between those slots and have those little dustbunnies in between. (HOST: [LAUGHS]) It's a much-more forgiving wood.

HOST: Great. [END]
